Is it bad that I’m considering going to self hosting simply to have the ability to add the wowhead tooltips? WordPress.com doesn’t allow javascript, so my cheapie fix has been the SNAPshots, which doesn’t really do that much.
Even I got a headache trying to use my gear list well.
Thoughts from those of you that went selfhosted with wordpress?
I’ve been self-hosted for years and haven’t regretted it yet. Hosting services are fine and dandy but when it gets to the point where they limit what you can do, rather than allowing you to customize as you wish, it’s time to move along.
As an aside: they don’t allow Javascript? How lame.
I’ve been self-hosting back before “blog” was a word in the vernacular. It’s highly recommended. These days, a lot of the work is done for you, including installation of CMSes (Content Management Software) like WordPress. My particular host doesn’t do it for you, but they do have what is called Fantastico De Luxe, which will automatically install them for you. My only concern for that is that the copy that they store on their server is a bit outdated, but it’s not an issue for me — I’ve been dabbling with webdesign for over a decade now!
There are a couple of nice things regarding self-hosting. You effectively brand yourself by purchasing a domain. A domain looks much more professional than a site on WordPress or Blogspot (blogging experts claim that having a site on a host in a couple of years will be the equivalent of visiting a site on the old Geocities or Agelfire. In other words, to be avoided). Plus the ability to have customized content or images is always a pleasure!
Keep in mind that self-hosting might mean that you need the competency to keep it running, the cash to pay for everything, domain registration if it’s not included with your package from the host, and a lot of patience during the initial days. But, hey, I say go for it!
